Current Level Status: Star Trek Online is a new sci-fi MMORPG by Cryptic Studios. STO offers lots of versatility and allows the player nearly full customization of how they play. It offers a different style of ‘leveling’ up that makes the game feel significantly less of a grind like other MMORPGs. The game also encourages a high amount of teamwork and fleet action (large amounts of players working towards a common goal) which is definitely one of the game’s perks. STO also offers two playable statuses, ground and ship. This not only offers a nice change of scenery from time to time, but challenges the player to master two different styles of gameplay. As stated, Star Trek Online is one of the most versatile MMORPGs to date. Having Beta tested this game, we definately give STO a positive review. If you are a fan of any previous sci-fi game, whether console, FPS, RPG, or any format, you most likely will enjoy STO. STO offers a level of customization only matched in single player RPG games, such as the Final Fantasy series. To begin, you can fully customize your character, starting with their faction and race and ending with how many rank badges are shown on your uniform. You can also customize your ship from its looks, to its color, to the bridge. Other than simple looks, you can also fully customize your character's skills. Each character is given a set amount of dozens of skills, as well as skills that are directly related to the type of officer your character is. Skills range from heals, shield regeneration, improved statistics, buffs, debuffs, crowd-control, and much more. In addition to skills, players are also allowed to choose from various different types of ships to fit their playstyle. In total, there are currently 7 different types of ships in the game. They range from small and offensive, to large and defensive, to crafty science vessels and to mammoth carriers. Lastly, each player is allowed to commission, train, and play with NPC Bridge Officers. Players can choose their own Bridge Officers, customize their looks, their skills, promote them, etc. When participating in Ground Combat and you are not teamed up with other players, you are allowed to bring up to four Bridge Officers along with you in your party. In Space Combat, your Bridge Officers allow you access to their skills. In other words, it offers a fun aspect of RPGs, such as Final Fantasy, in an MMORPG. Overall, STO looks very promising for a long and prosperous future. As stated above, if you have ever played a sci-fi game in the past that you enjoyed, you most likely will enjoy STO even more. And even if you're new to sci-fi games, STO is a great game to start with. Strategy Guides Basic Information and Gameplay (FREE) |
